In short

Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate that can cause difficulty urinating, a weak urinary stream and frequent urination. Dr. Pérez-Carral treats it through the urethra, without skin incisions, with HoLEP, which can treat prostates of almost any size, and with Aquabeam, whose main advantage is that it can preserve the area through which the patient ejaculates.

Two surgical options

Book an appointment so the doctor can assess your case and determine which option is right for you.

HoLEP (holmium laser enucleation)

A holmium laser separates the prostatic adenoma from the capsule that surrounds it. The removed tissue can be examined. It allows prostates of almost any size to be treated.

About HoLEP

Aquabeam (prostatic hydroablation)

A high-pressure waterjet, planned with ultrasound and operated by a robotic arm, removes the tissue without using heat and respects the area through which the patient ejaculates.

About Aquabeam

Coming from abroad or from another part of Spain

  • Second opinion: you can send your reports and the doctor reviews your documentation and gives you a written report, without travelling to Madrid.
  • Hospital stay: after HoLEP, patients usually spend one night under observation and go home the next day; after Aquabeam, the stay is usually 24 to 48 hours.
  • Cost: once the doctor has assessed you, a closed price estimate and a quote can be discussed. Coverage depends on your policy and your insurance company, so you must confirm it directly with them.

Frequently asked questions

Does the surgery leave a scar?

No. Both HoLEP and Aquabeam are performed through the urethra, without skin incisions, so they leave no external scars.

How long is the hospital stay?

After HoLEP, patients usually spend one night under observation and go home the next day. After Aquabeam, the stay is usually 24 to 48 hours.

Can a very large prostate be treated without open surgery?

HoLEP allows prostates of almost any size to be treated, including very large ones that used to require open surgery.

A medical visit, in person or online, is essential before any treatment is decided, surgical or not: the same diagnosis can have several treatment options.
